Remembering Tom Allison

First Ops 20th Anniversary
Tom Allison 20th Anniversary First Ops 1988

In 1982 Tom and Carol Allison were living in an apartment complex near the Pentagon. Tom was an advisor to the National Aerospace and Science Museum in Washington DC. I remember having dinner with Tom and Carol somewhere in Georgetown at a very nice restaurant. I had been forcibly retired from AIL in early 1992 after 34 years and had taken a U2 job with E Systems Melpar in Falls Church VA. All the SR71 ELINT equipment had been shipped and set up at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. My nephew, Steve, was coming down to visit me from Fort Monmouth New Jersey and I asked Tom where would be the best place to take him to show him Washington DC. Tom suggested the Friday evening ceremony at the Marine Barracks. To get into the ceremony you had to be on a list prior to appearing at the site. Tom was able to get us on the list and we showed up about 45 minutes prior to the start. The seating was in bleachers facing the barracks with a large grassy parade ground between. As more people began arriving. I was surprised to see to the number of General and Flag officers coming for the ceremony. The reason became apparent when Dick Cheney, then vice president, came to be the reviewer. The ceremony lasted about an hour and ten minutes. I consider it the best free show in Washington DC. Thank you Tom. RIP
